On Monday the Streetfront students helped support one of our supporters CLICK
Our students were the underdogs in the high school tug-of-war contest, going against schools that had hundreds of students to choose from. We didn’t win but we had a lot fun and we showed our true grit! Now to challenge the same students to a long-distance race!

On April 25th three Streetfront students along with Trevor spoke at a school assembly at Dr. R.E.O. McKechnie Elementary School. Jasper, Nick and Jesse did a fantastic job speaking to the young students about their experiences at Streetfront, their marathon running accomplishments and Streetfront’s Street2Peak Project: Mt. Kilimanjaro.
This talk is one of many to come over the years as part of a mission of the S2P Project to have youth inspire youth to go beyond what they think is possible, to reinforce that it doesn’t matter where you come from – it matters where you go!

Today we worked in our garden guided by the staff and volunteers with the Environmental Youth Alliance. We sampled the leaves and flowers (taste like broccoli) of our Kale plants, planted two more apple trees, added more mulch to the paths, transplanted the green onions from our indoor starter garden and into their new home soil, did some weeding, and mixed some of our rich on site compost into the garden beds. Despite the rain we accomplished a lot, learnt some new things and had fun.
How is this connected to our Mt. Kilimanjaro trip? Britannia has a sister community garden program with the Sega Girls School in Morogoro, Tanzania. Sega is a residential secondary school for bright motivated Tanzanian girls who otherwise are unable to attend school due to extreme poverty. If possible we hope to visit their school and garden when we are in Tanzania in March 2015!

In our constant quest for fitness and group bonding, two goals in our training for Kilimanjaro, we recently completed our annual Winter Camp. Once again we utilized the conveniently accessible Scouts cabin in the Hollyburn area of Cypress Provincial Park.
The 30 minute hike into the cabin was for some students their first experience carrying in their gear and food. Teamwork was important since the students were arranged into food groups – coming up with their menus, shopping, packaging, cooking and cleaning up after themselves. Many students had little or no grocery budgeting and shopping experience so new skills were obtained.
Activities included snowshoeing at Mt. Seymour Provincial Park, snowboarding at Cypress Mountain and many evening group games while relaxing at the cabin. The class once again impressed the staff with their compassion and care for each other, especially when a fellow classmate was injured during snowboarding.
We look forward to many more training opportunities, disguised as adventures, as we work towards our epic Kilimanjaro trip!
